Beyond Pumpkin Spice with Tammi Arender

Pumpkin spice always comes to mind when fall is near. We watch as pumpkin spice foods, drinks, candles, and other products flood the market, with good reason—because it is one of the wonderful aromas of the season. For this issue, we consulted with one of our Louisiana celebrities and baker extraordinaire, Tammi Arender, to get other seasonal ideas. Her social media platforms are always full of delicious desserts that wet our taste buds and make us want to jump into the kitchen. Tammi is a news anchor on RFD-TV and contributes to the motorcycle travel show, La Rider TV, which airs in most of the Louisiana TV markets. Mountaintop Perspective

It is so easy to look at those around us and see the mountaintop experiences people are having. It may even leave us feeling as though we are walking through the valley of their mountain. Maybe we think to ourselves, just look at those perfect mountain top views as we watch people experience what seems like a life filled with nothing but excitement. If we are not careful, it can be easy to get sucked into that way of thinking. Especially with social media being designed to show us everything we are missing out on. Heck, now they even have “social media influencers” that get paid to create content that persuades people to buy what they are buying, eat what they are eating, do what they are doing, and go where they are going. It can leave us feeling like we are missing out if we are not kee...

The Color Wheel and What it Means for Decorating Your Home

The color wheel is one of the most important tools for understanding and using color in design. It is a visual representation of how colors relate to each other and the effects of combining them. It can be used as a guide to choose the perfect colors for your home decor, and is an invaluable tool to help create a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing space. The color wheel is circular and is divided into 12 sections. These sections represent the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. The primary colors are red, blue, and yellow, which can’t be made by mixing other colors. The secondary colors are green, orange, and purple, which are created by mixing two primary colors, while the tertiary colors are made up of a primary color and a secondary color. The color wheel is also divided int...

Being Seen

Many fear it, but Friday the 13th is special to me. It’s a day I set aside to thank God for rescuing me from certain death on a Friday the 13th many years ago. I thank Him for preparing me and my surroundings for that day and every day. As I think about how I’ll mark this particular Friday the 13th, it seems God is reminding me that He saw me then, a vulnerable little girl, and He sees me now.  It’s a basic human need to feel seen—really seen. We may wear masks because we think we want to be seen in a certain way with only minor cutesy faults or without blemishes, but we really want to know that someone knows and loves the real us. God made us to have connections with Him and each other. Feeling seen — really seen — is necessary for connection. We can be in a large crowd, seeing ...

Summer is gone and with that the earth is starting to shed the old to prepare for the new. As Fall rolls in, everything about life begins to slow down and prepare for those restorative months that tend to focus more on resting and digesting (i.e., November—February). It’s a process and takes time, but the result is a beautiful new season. We all try to enter each season right by eating healthier and exercising more—maybe kicking some old habits—and while those things surely affect our physical health, what about our mental and emotional health? We can all make time to get active or pick up a hobby, but does that really help us uncover the person buried deep inside underneath all that stress and all those efforts? Shedding old habits and finding a fresh perspective takes time, patience, ...

Prepare Your Soil for Louisiana’s Cool weather Planting Season

With fall just around the corner, now is the time to start preparing the soil for planting season in Louisiana. Fall is the best time of the year to get your garden off to a great start, so taking the time to properly prepare your soil will ensure a bountiful harvest. The first step to preparing your soil for Louisiana’s fall planting season is to test the soil’s pH level. Louisiana has a naturally acidic soil, so having a balanced pH level is key for healthy growth. To test the soil’s pH level, you can buy a soil test kit from any garden center or home improvement store. The kit will provide you with instructions on how to properly test the soil. If the soil pH is too low (below 6.5), you’ll want to add lime or wood ash to bring the pH level up. If the pH is too high (above 7.5), you’l...

Latte makeup is the perfect way to achieve a natural-looking, dewy complexion. Start by applying a light foundation to even out the skin tone and provide coverage. Follow up with a highlighter across the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, brow bone, and cupid’s bow. Bronzer and blush will then help create a warm, sun-kissed glow. Finish by applying a matte brown eyeshadow across the lid and crease of the eye, and line the bottom and top lash line with a black or brown eyeliner.
