Change, Change, and Change

I always thought of myself as someone who was not fond of change. However, I do love changing up my daily routine throughout the week and tackling new challenges, which sounds the opposite of someone who isn’t fond of change. Truth is, I get bored easily, and if I am bored, I lose interest. Those are changes I can control. There are things that I don’t like to see change at all because it throws me off, such as my surroundings, especially my home. My husband loves to update style and décor pretty often, so I have a space in our house that doesn’t change—my office. If I make small changes in there, it’s okay. Large ones? No way. I am comfortable and productive there. If it changed dramatically, I wouldn’t be. The constant cycle of change in nature reminds me that change is not only inev...

Home is Where the Heart is?

The saying “home is where the heart is” is a phrase that we have all heard at one point or another in our lives. It speaks to the idea that our true home is not just a physical space, but rather a place where we feel loved, safe, and at peace. However, when it comes to home decor, it is often only one person’s style that is reflected in the overall design. This can often lead to other occupants of the home feeling less attached to their space, since it really doesn’t reflect their own personal style and taste. According to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders, a little over 60% of homeowners say that the decor in their homes is not reflective of their style or personality. Just under 40% say they were never consulted on their style, what they liked or didn’t like. Thes...

From the daily unrest on our own country’s soil to the sounds of war breaking out overseas, the chaos our world seems to be in appears only to be getting worse. Every day we turn the tv on we are hearing of not only natural disasters but manmade disasters. So much of what we see is out of our control, which can leave us with a sense of hopelessness as we wonder if things will ever calm down, or if things will ever go back to the way they used to be. If you are like me, it is hard for my heart to not ache as I wonder what this world will look like for my children as they begin to get married and raise a family of their own. Today, amidst our current, ever-inflating cost-of-living crisis, the pressure around spending money isn’t just overwhelming, it’s downright suffocating. Not only is there pressure to spend the outrageous amounts required on basic needs, like food, clothing, and shelter, but there’s also an ever more dangerous pressure to keep up with the Joneses. While these pressures are surely rough on our wallets and bank accounts, they’re even more detrimental to our mental health. For previous generations, like Baby Boomers and us super cool Gen-Xers, financial peer pressure revolved around a perceived need to buy the same (expensive) items or follow the same lifestyle as friends, colleagues, and neighbors (i.e., “keeping up with the Joneses”). For Millennials and Gen-Zers, that pressure severely ...

Celebrating Spring in the South

I love and enjoy all the seasons for many reasons, the most important of which is because they bring new opportunity and meaning to age-old traditions, but I particularly love Spring. Days brighten, Mother Nature blooms and blossoms, and little birds tweet their tunes nonstop (and usually right outside your home office window while you’re trying to work!). It’s the time of year when afternoons stretch their way towards those gorgeous, colorful sunsets, local snowball stands open, outdoor hangouts with family and/or friends fire up, lovebugs swarm in, and crawfish boils come to life. Spring just brings out the love and liveliness in people and particularly for me, Spring in South Louisiana signals the start of three things: food, fun with family and friends, and festivals. Dusting, decluttering, and organizing our homes. But have you ever stopped to think about the deeper meaning behind this annual ritual? Sure, a clean and organized living space can bring a sense of calm and productivity, but what if we applied the concept of spring cleaning to our lives as a whole? I recently heard someone say, “Spring cleaning is not just about getting rid of the old, but making room for the new.” This idea resonated with me and got me thinking. How often do I hold onto things in my life that no longer serve me? How many old habits, grudges, and negative thoughts do I reall...

A Winter porch garden could be exactly what you need. My very first edible porch planter came from me breaking the cardinal rule of Wild Child gardening: I went to the nursery on a whim, without a plan. The result was shocking: a gorgeous Winter porch garden. Now, several years later, I have mastered the a...

City vs. Country, Creole and Cajun Cooking

Creole and Cajun cooking are two types of cooking that originated in Louisiana. Both styles of cooking often use a blend of French, Spanish, Caribbean, African, and Native American influences. While both Creole and Cajun cooking are popular in Louisiana, they have distinct differences that set them apart. The history of Creole and Cajun Cooking is simple: Creole originated in the 1700s, Cajun in the second half of the 18th century. But what are the actual differences? A couple of common generalizations are that Creole vs. Cajun is like city vs. country, and that Creole cooking feeds one family with three chickens, Cajun cooking feeds three families with one chicken. Often Creole cuisine is luxurious, refined and sometimes indulgent with its ingredients, while Cajun cooking emphasize...

Mountaintop Perspective

It is so easy to look at those around us and see the mountaintop experiences people are having. It may even leave us feeling as though we are walking through the valley of their mountain. Maybe we think to ourselves, just look at those perfect mountain top views as we watch people experience what seems like a life filled with nothing but excitement. If we are not careful, it can be easy to get sucked into that way of thinking. Especially with social media being designed to show us everything we are missing out on. Heck, now they even have “social media influencers” that get paid to create content that persuades people to buy what they are buying, eat what they are eating, do what they are doing, and go where they are going. It can leave us feeling like we are missing out if we are not kee...
